Overview
STP App is designed with your privacy in mind. We collect only the minimum data necessary to help you navigate the Seattle to Portland bike ride.
Key Point: Your location data stays on your device. We do not upload, store, or share your GPS location with any server or third party.
Information We Collect
When you use STP App, we access:
- Location Data: Your device's GPS location, used to show your position on the route map and trigger checkpoint alerts.
- User Preferences: Your settings (pace, start time, notification preferences) are stored locally on your device.
- Profile Information: Your name and bib number, which you provide and which are displayed with any photos you share.
- Photos: Photos you choose to share are uploaded to Google Photos and displayed to other app users.
How We Use Your Information
Your information is used solely to:
- Display your current position on the STP route map
- Calculate estimated arrival times at checkpoints
- Send local notifications when you approach checkpoints
- Show relevant weather forecasts based on your expected arrival times
Photo Sharing
STP App includes a photo feed where riders can share photos from the ride:
- What's Shared: When you post a photo, your name, bib number, caption, and the photo itself are visible to all app users.
- Photo Storage: Photos are stored in Google Photos and post data (captions, likes) is stored in Firebase Firestore.
- Location in Photos: If your photo contains GPS metadata, it may be used to categorize the photo by checkpoint location.
- Interactions: Other users can "like" your photos. There is no commenting, messaging, or other direct interaction between users.
- Visibility: All shared photos are visible to all STP App users. Do not share photos you wish to keep private.
Weather Data
The app fetches weather forecasts from OpenWeatherMap for the 12 STP checkpoints. To reduce API calls and improve performance:
- Weather data is cached in Firebase Firestore, shared across all users
- Only checkpoint locations and times are used for weather lookups
- Your personal location is never sent to weather services
Data Storage
- On Your Device: Your preferences, pace settings, and profile information are stored locally using iOS secure storage.
- In the Cloud: Weather cache data is stored in Firebase. If you share photos, your posts (including name, bib number, captions, and photos) are stored in Firebase Firestore and Google Photos.
Data Sharing
We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with any third parties. Your location data never leaves your device except when embedded in photos you choose to share. Photos you post are visible to other STP App users.
No Tracking or Analytics
STP App does not use:
- Advertising trackers or identifiers
- Analytics SDKs (Google Analytics, Facebook, etc.)
- User behavior tracking
- Crash reporting that collects personal data
Your Choices
You have full control over your data:
- Deny location access to use the app without GPS features
- Choose "While Using" instead of "Always" for location access
- Disable notifications if you don't want checkpoint alerts
- Delete the app to remove all locally stored data
Children's Privacy
STP App does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. The app is designed for cyclists participating in the Seattle to Portland ride.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will notify you of any significant changes by updating the "Last updated" date at the top of this page.
